Jimmy I down loaded it to Guide 9.0 and now I have more stars on my star charts than I can see in my Telescope. This catalog is complete to 16th magnitude and features much better positional and proper motion data than its predecessors. It is gradually being integrated into many planetarium programs. If you have a program which can reference the catalog data, and are interested in obtaining a copy of the catalog files, you can request a DVD from the Naval Observatory or download the files from a CDS (Centre de Données astronomiques de Strasbourg) mirror. The 900 data files in the catalog, combined with a few dozen support files, occupy 8.5 GB, so the download option takes a while. It took me most of the weekend, but I was able to grab the full set and can make them available in a ZIP file (only 5.5 GB :-) on USB flash if you want to get a copy from me. I'll bring the flash with me to AAMM next week and again to the club meeting on the 22nd. I'm hoping before then to have signatures (hashes) of the files from USNO to ensure that none of the data are corrupted. It only takes a few minutes to copy the ZIP file from the flash. If you're interested in copying my data prior to the AAMM, contact me off list and we can make arrangements to meet up somewhere convenient. It's not like I'll be out observing over the weekend as I'd planned :-(. -- Mike -- -- cal_donley@xxxxxxx -- Joseph R. Goss 5108 E.
