Yes, we can contact the rancher dude, but will it do any good?  I mean, if
it turns out to be astronomers leaving the thing open, then will it matter
to him that "it wasn't us".  I think that he'd do whatever to keep the gate
closed if it is a problem, regardless of who it is.  In other words, I don't
think that the rancher dude will make the distinction between SAC and any
other group setting up scopes in his pasture and leaving the gate open.
