Dear RSC,

Trey and I have been working on a new way into the aesthetics conversation, and
we're really looking forward to working on/playing with these ideas this
weekend. For our activity to go swimmingly, everybody's got to do a little bit
of thinking and playing BEFORE the retreat. I know you're all busy....but this
will be worth it---we promise!

Here's the scoop:

Think a little bit about what 'aesthetics' means to you, in the way
that you do your personal work. Then, bring something to share with us
that exhibits something about your personal aesthetics. This could be
ANYTHING---something related to your primary artistic discipline,
something scholarly you've written on the subject, a 30-45 second
performance you'd like to share with us, a photograph or collection of
photographs----or something completely different. The idea is to think
about the idea of aesthetics in a personally meaningful way, and then
turn that reflection into an artistic representation that you can share
with us. We'll be using this for an exercise on Saturday morning.

Please take the time to do this. Everyone's thoughtful participation is
required for the subsequent activity and discussion to bear fruit.

Till this weekend,
Melanie
