Looking at the
camera back, I can see that the labyrinth seal on that side is slighthy
bent (and was probably bent back), but not too badly. Additionally, one
of the riveted-in foots is wiggly:

<https://www2.spg.tu-darmstadt.de/~hf/rolleicord/DSCI0091.jpg> outside

It appears loose enough to let in some light, and the missing paint
probably won't help.

First of all, thanks for the wealth of advice! It took me a few days to get
back to this - I am on the recovering end of a flu, and the daily routine
didn't leave much energy lately.

All I can contribute is that I once had a missing foot on a Rolleicord and
that caused a *very bad* light leak. So a loose foot may well be the cause.

This was a welcome confirmation of my suspicion. I am kind of puzzled that
a seasoned repair man would pass such an issue unheeded.

The Rollei Factory Repair Manual from 1974 shows an exploded
view about the Rolleicord Va back with a disassembled foot and tne parts
list describes it as "rivet (Formniet)" and the quantity is four of course.
The part number 00448.00.0 was used up to 1962 and it would be the right
catalog number for the 'cord IV foot. The general paint for several
internal parts indicates "Paint black half mate".

Thanks, Carlos! While F&H haven't been too helpful with replacement parts
lately, it is sure good to know what they're called. ;)

I was certain, though, that this Formniet was perfectly servicable, and so
was not on the lookout for a replacement.

The other solution about the back would be to get one in better condition.

Same goes for the back, which seems a perfect match for the IV. It would be
cruel to separate the two after sixty years, don't you think? But it's good
to know the backs are widely exchangeable between Rolleiflexen.

carefully and not too strongly hammering the inside part back into
place. Use a flat punch (nail punch, but a flat one) and a small
hammer. Make sure the foot is on a solid surface so it does not move
from hammering. Only do enough to stop the foot moving, any more could
risk damaging the back.

Thanks, Richard - this is what I ended up doing.

I used my vise for solid surface, and set the loose foot onto a properly
sized nut. Since the nut was just a millimetre or two thicker than the foot
length, the back sat securely on the vise's anvil, and allowed for a
controlled punch. A recently acquired set of nail punches had one with just
the right diameter.

A timid pat with a 300 g hammer didn't make any difference, but a second,
more determined one fixed the rivet properly.

Make sure to work the paint into any joints to
help prevent light entering.

While it will not match the original paint, I have had good luck using
matt black acrylic hobby paint (like used for plastic scale models of
aircraft, boats and similar). Note the acrylic type paint is much
less reflective than enamel paint.

I visited the local toy shop today, and picked up a little can of matte
black enamel paint. Since the original paint with its ice flower effect is
off the market because of its lead content, I figured any kind of black
would do for the inside. I touched up the rivet and its surroundings, as
well as a few other spots where paint had flaked off, and the IV back is
currently sitting to dry.

The weather here has markedly improved recently, and I am sure the weekend
will bring opportunities for a test roll.

Thanks again to all who provided advice!

Cheerio,
Hauke
