So my question is, just HOW is this possible? If each cone in the
human fovea is only 1/400 of a millimetre in diameter or thereabouts,
this should just NOT be possible!
Any ideas? Richard ... ? Anyone?

Since your eyes are constantly moving and spreading the information
around to multiple sensors which then communicate
to each other your actual resolution is multiples of that. If you
could hold your eye still and stare.. the hair would disappear.
