Its measuring the light reflected off the spot you've got it aiming on.
So you can measure the light bouncing off his white color making sure its
not too bright. And black pants making sure its not too dark. For your
materials.
If you walked up to the guy and turned around and took an incident reading
with the dome in the front that's all you'd know. How much light was hitting
him. Nothing about how much was bouncing off.
