Great black box, hmmm - Well, I've ordered a B+W series 6 medium yellow #8
filter from B&H and when it comes in, I'll test it against H&H's medium
yellow #8 with the nomenclature on the glass. What's interesting is that
this B+W filter and size is about the same price I paid H&H. Will let you
all know results of the shoot out.

Filter quality and its effect on the image is one of the great black
boxes of photography. At least one, and I believe several, of the
photo mags tested filter quality and if memory serves me right found
it all over the place with no correlation between price and quality
and little consistency from year to year across brands.
Clearly H&H will be of the opinion that such markings on the filter
glass will not obviously harm image quality or they would not do it.
Whether or not this is accurate information across all shooting
situations is still very much an open question in my mind, and I agree
with Richard Knoppow's view posted earlier...
