Oh, yes, let's tear the List apart!  <he grins>

Carl Zeiss almost always concentrated on optical quality and the economics be damned. There are other firms whose products are as good -- Joseph Schneider Kreuznach comes to mind, as does Asahi in Japan -- but they had to face the same wall of diminishing returns which plagued Zeiss. Carl Zeiss Jena was the first firm to produce scientifically designed lenses but others have made some phenomenally good optics along the way, such as Taylor, Taylor and Hobson in the UK.
