OK I just tried it and it worked. (resulting I'm sure in a very over exposed and out of focus picture of me) But the shutter did open.

I have a really old Rollei (I think its from the 50's) that someone just gave me. I've been planning to use it for night sky shots. However the cable release that I have doesn't seem to work for it. It screws in but when I push the plunger it doesn't take a picture.
Any tips

Some of us consider 1930's Rolleis to be really old:-)
If this is one of the models where the cable release screws into the button used for tripping the shutter there may be a part missing. There is a rod inside the release socket that the end of the cable release presses against. If its missing the the cable release won't work unless it has a very long throw. You may be able to see what is in the socket by shining a flash light into it.
If you post the serial number of the camera it can be dated and the model identified. The serial number on most Rolleiflexes is under the name at the front of the finder hood.
