[roc-chat] Re: Osiris 3.9XL - Virtues of an Altacc...

I think this is a problem with all USB/RS232 adapters.  I have tried every way I can find to assign a specific port to an adapter, without success.  I try making sure I plug it in the same USB poert every time, I have tried designating it in the hardware manager; nothing seem to help.

My netbook will even sometimes assign a strange setting, like com port 13 or 15, which some of my software can't access.  Many program limit you to com ports 1 to 8.  In these cases I have to reboot and try again.  This is an issue with my Byonics APRS tracker, my Meade telescope, and my Perfectflite altimeter...

One of these days the manufacturers of our toys are going to have to realize that computers haven't had a DB-9 serial connector for a while and start making stuff with native USB...

I am still having issues downloading the Altacc sometimes and it is usually the port settings.  Same with the Control.  For once I would like to plug it in and have it find the port automatically.  Seems pretty stupid to have to go in and line up the port setting every single time.  I don't know if that is the function of the usb/serial adapter or what.  When I actually had a serial port, I don't remember having that problem.  I have a Featherweight Parrot and the interface for that is much better.   But then the Altacc and Control are both dinosaurs compared the the Parrot and Raven.

The best adapter that I could find at the time for my computer was IOgears GUC232A USB to Serial adapter. Works great with downloading flight data but will sometimes lock up when using the read live data option. I think it overloads the buffer but everything else works fine.

I loaned it to Kurt G. at one time and he for some reason couldn't get it to work properly so it's possible that it won't work on some computers or that Kurt didn't have the correct port setting.

I'll have to look to see what adapter I have. It's on a 5 year old Dell laptop in the shop. Actually Ron I got a line on another! :D

I stopped using it when Wayne got me into hybrids ;) I guess people said it was not optimal for the thrust profile. Or something like that...

Other than not reading out the altitude from the LED, the Altacc, being a recording altimeter, was actually WAY ahead of its time. Or at least lead the way. I used to correspond with Konrad Hambrick who did the coding down in San Diego. You could work the data and find out the CD of your rocket. THAT is what is missing IMO about the Altimeter Two. It's REALLY handy to know the real CD of a rocket.

Anyway mounting the Altacc is sooo freakin simple. Arming it is simple. Everything about it is simple. (Cept reading the altitude!) And though I've only had about 25 out of a 100 HPR flights using an Altimeter for deployment, the little Altacc has never failed. And I like that I can test it easily.

Cheap, yah good luck! Them thar things are collectors items. yuk, yuk!

So which adapter are you using? I did some testing for Scott Bartell way back when (I did it on my own) and he was very gracious for me putting the info out from my tests.

Yep! It's the very same. It's an AltAcc 2. One of the originals. I've tested it with 12v lamps and it's working fine. Then I got a Serial to USB adapter on my Laptop and made sure I could run the old proread and produce to get the data out...

I'd love to buy a backup on the cheap. :)

(Cheap = under 50 bucks) :)

Hey Jeff,

That hole pattern in the Ebay sure looks like the same hole pattern as an AltAcc manufactured by the late Black Sky Rocketry Company ;^)

PS Does anyone remember Delta V Rocket motors or perhaps even want too? To do so is definitely dating ones self lol

I am sure a few of you remember last weeks flight of the upscaled The Launch Pad Osiris on an H97-S. 'S' standing for 'Still too long'. :)

To be honest the rocket has flown many times with a recording altimeter. Over that time I've dialed in the CD on ROCKSIM based on those flights. It was getting to the point where flights were within 10% to 15% of ROCKSIMs predictions. So it should have had PLENTY of margin for apogee deployment... I am not sure what went south. My guess looking at the rail guides is those guides should have been replaced a long time ago and it expended too much energy off the pad. It's speculation but the flight was way low for a 5 pound rocket.

Anyway... since the PML tubing was glassed when I built it, I was able to go from picture 1 to picture 2 one week later... - Now slightly longer and sporting an Altimeter bay for an Altacc or MissileWorks RRC
