Hi Roseanne and all, Below is a series of steps Allan Lemly very wonderfully
posted to the victor Stream list when I asked if I could possibly repair to
some extent my corrupted sdhc card. This was posted to the VR stream list
almost three weeks ago. I asked him for steps for Window eyes, but I think
the commands are windows commands, and not screen reader specific. I have
not yet tried this process with my card, but I will be trying this in a
couple of days. Let us know if this works and your client can be happily
reunited with his notes. regards, Ginnie
Ginny, do the following to perform what you are calling a scan of your SD
card and
what I call the chkdsk procedure:
1. Put your SD card in your card reader and attach the card reader to a USB
port on
your computer.
2. If an AutoRun dialog box pops up requesting what action to perform on the
attached
drive, press the escape key to close it.
3. On your desktop, double click the My Computer icon or launch it in
whatever way you
normally do.
4. A window called My Computer with a list of drives on your system will
open and use
your arrow keys to place the focus on the appropriate drive letter
representing your
SD card reader. On my system, it is listed as Removable Disk (E:), where E:
is the
letter designation of the card reader.
5. Press alt enter to open the Properties dialog box for your SD card.
6. The dialog box has two rows of tabs for different options and the focus
should be
on the General tab when first opened. Press ctrl tab twice to move the focus
to the
Tools tab.
7. The Tools tab contains two sections, one called Error-checking which is
what you
want and one called Defragmentation which should be avoided. Defragmenting
flash
media is not recommended since it can shorten its life. Press alt c to
select error
checking and open the dialog box entitled Check Disk Removable Disk (the
applicable
drive letter of your SD card).
8. Two options for checking are available. Press alt a to tick the box to
automatically
fix file system errors and press alt n to scan for and attempt recovery of
bad sectors.
9. Press alt s to start the error-checking procedure.
10. A progress bar will begin indicating the checking procedure. Phase 1 may
take several
minutes depending on the speed of your computer, the speed of your SD card,
and the
size of your SD card. Phase 2 was much faster on my system probably due to
their
being no errors on my SD card.
11. The dialog box will say Disk Check Complete and you should press enter
to close
it.
12. You will be taken back to the Properties dialog box for your SD card.
Press alt F4
(that's function key 4) to close it.
13. Try your card in your Stream to see if the problem is resolved. If not,
you may need
to format your SD card. Formatting will erase anything on your card so make
sure
you have a backup of needed files on your computer's hard disk. I would
recommend
that you use the formatting utility built into the Stream since it
guarantees the
format will be to its required specification.
Good luck.
Alan Lemly

Subject: [real-eyes] DAMAGED SD CARD

Hello all:

I know it's probably a lost cause, but does anyone know if a corrupted sd
card can be repaired? A client of mine has lost all his files that he
recorded using the Victor Reader Stream. I was able to finally get the
computer to recognize book shelves on the card, but it will not allow me to
open any of them. As I said, I know it's probably a lost cause. I just
thought I'd ask.
Thank you.

Best Regards,
Roseanne Young
