[racktables-users] Re: Patch Panel usage

In our setup I have created an additional patch panel type called
OfficePatchPanel. We use that for your case 1 and the original patch
panel for case 2.

The OfficePatchPanel is used if you just want to log a cable going into
a patch panel but do not really care where it goes (i.e. an office
floor).

The original patch panel is a different case. Using a custom built
plugin, I generate ports based on an attribute (Number of ports). For
every port on the front needed I create 2, eth1 and eth1link where eth1
represents the front and eth1link the back. With another custom built
plugin I connect the back ends with a link (the panels are linked
through the name in the visible label).
Once this is all done, we can use a 3rd custom built plugin which I've
called Family to trace the 'Family' of an object. It tracks an object's
path from one object to another (through patch panels) to find it's
parent and ultimately it's end-parent (for example a patch panel or a
power panel). I've modified the ports view on the default tab of an
object to not only show where the port is linked to, but also what the
end-parent is.

I hope this answers your question.

Kind regards,
Jeroen

I just re-read this and missed adding the two cases that I am currently
working with.

Case #1) End Run Patch Panel. Patch panel exist in rack and each is
terminated directly into a switch.

Case #2) Tandem Patch Panels. Patch panel is connected to another
patch panel and patch cords are used to connect the equipment to the
panel and the second panel to another object.

Racktables users,

I am trying to get an idea of how people use patch
panels in their datacenters. While I can speak from personal experience
I would like to hear how everyone else uses them so I can get a better
idea of how to handle the path tracking feature I am currently working
into the trunk.
