I mistyped when I said 'Epson' - it is the Ilford enlarging meter that I use. It has a sensor, a knob and three LEDs, a red 'over' led, a red 'under' led and a green just right. I pick a neutral part of the image - usually a face if it is a portrait, put the meter on the easel and turn the knob until I get the green LED. Raise the head, then open the aperture until the Green LED comes back.
I use the same meter, and a slightly different procedure. The meter has two controls: sensitivity and time. To compensate for change in magnification, I set the TIME control to the initial time, meter an area that has a uniform tone, and adjust the SENSITIVITY control for the green led. Then, change the magnification, meter the same area and find the new exposure time by adjusting the TIME control for the green led. This method compensates for changes in magnification and/or aperture.
(I've glued a small knob on the sensitivity control to make it easier to adjust.)
