My first experience with concentrated nitric was doing a Geology lab in
college. I was using the acid to dissolve rock samples when I slopped
some onto a couple of fingers. Thinking that I was about to see my
appendages dissolve before my eyes - after all, I was dissolving ROCKS
with the stuff! - I made a dive for the sink. About the time I reached
the faucet, it dawned on me that I hadn't felt any discomfort yet, so I
chanced a glimpse - probably my last - at my fingers and was amazed to
find that they were still there! Somewhat yellow, but intact. I washed
it off anyway, and learned the next day that I had not had a life- (or
appendage-)threatening event (which was OK with me!)

I remember back in my chemistry days discovering the following day that
I had gotten conc nitric acid on my hand. There would be a yellow or
orange area of hardened skin, something like a callous. No discomfort
from the initial contact though. No lasting damage either.
