[pure-silver] Re: Thiocarbamide Toner: now chemicals

> nitric acid ... nasty stuff

I remember back in my chemistry days discovering the following day that
I had gotten conc nitric acid on my hand. There would be a yellow or
orange area of hardened skin, something like a callous. No discomfort
from the initial contact though. No lasting damage either.

Now conc hydrochloric acid was different, this stuff started to "bite"
as soon as you contacted it and you could feel it. You wanted to get
this stuff washed off!. 6 Molar sulfuric -- you wouldn't know that
you'd gotten it on your clothes until holes appeared when you washed
them.

I'm not advocating being careless with chemicals but our governments
have done a fine job of generating a great deal of hysteria on the
subject. The result has been that many schools have dropped their
chamistry labs and more importantly for us their photolabs. A few years
ago I offered to teach a photo course. The school's response was that
they couldn't do that "why the students would have to handle
CHEMICALS!!!".
