I just bought my first flatbed/slide&neg scanner

I found flat-bed scanning a PITA for making contact sheets.
I'm no contact sheet maven but I can do it faster, and
with better results, the old wet way.

But, you might also try asking on:
http://www.dpug.org/forums/home.php
There's folks there that do this sort of thing and
seem to be satisfied...
