Prasanna,
I have had the experience of talking Free Software to people who hardly
have seen a computer, and that really leads to me to the question, how do
we present Free Software.

The way I see, is what you are talking about, Explain the issues with the
existing apps, show them about mass survillence, and make them ask the
question, "What should I do to escape this ?". That is when we should talk
about Free Software. Straight away saying we are going to give a talk on
Free Software is not really going to make sense.

And as a part of this public reachout, we should clearly show out our
community activities, else, there is not really going be the continum
factor from the public.
As a part of our display, instead of displaying stalls on VLC and stuff,
we should display, our expriments on "Community Weather station", Mesh
Network.

Well is this really going to impress people. I would only say partially.
Well the major question in people mind today is not about the use of a
computer, the question boils down to, "What is Free Software is really
going make the difference". Well this is where the fun comes. The biggest
difference we have acheived is taking "Free Software in Education". That is
the right difference. The change at the root level. We clearly need to
showcase, our activities in "Free Software in Education" and need to
project that out.

That is what is really going to have a bigger impact. Not sure what kinda
impact, but a much better one that we have had till now, I belive.

So my take is, for the public outreach program , be extremely focussed on
showcasing what we are, and where have we made a difference.
Typically, show them about Mass Survillence and tracking in the computers
in their hand. Show case, Mesh and Weather STations. And if we could
include our "Free Software in Education" activities as the front point,
that is the imact we are taking about. We can talk about various free
softwares when they reach back to us. Because if they are reaching us back,
we have already had our success.

My Views on what we might want to focus on for this walkout.

Thanks for writing this email Ramaseshan.

I have no doubt that we should reach out to public. But we need concrete
use-cases and day-to-day practices where free software makes a difference
in their life. If we can identify those, taking those to public would help
them connect with free software and eventually everyone will feel that they
are contributing to the society.

We need to understand the people in pondicherry, their economic
background, their social background etc., else just going out in a public
space like beach and then distributing pamphlet or even explaining what is
free software would make no sense to people who don't even understand or
haven't got a chance yet to use computers in first place.

Today we have various range of Smartphones (especially Android phones).
Explaining the presence of spyware, malware, adware in proprietary
softwares with proper case studies and live demo's through their phone, I
think we can take the idea of free software to them. That's again my
suggestion.

Let me see what others think about it.

Hi people,
Great to have an SFD done great with a lot of enthusiasm and with all
odds and great, we have great fun. As Prasanna mentioned in the discussion,
"We never lost the enthusiasm at any point".
So this year's SFD was celebrated short and sweet.
But wait, no, we are yet make the blast.

Yes, the SFD we celebrated was just the start. The main event is yet to
make into the streets , to the common citizens of our society. Yes, the
very definition of SFD, says taking Free Software and its philosophies to
the common citizens of our society.

Ok, yay ! lets take more about this.

We are yet to go the beach or some other common place where people
gather a lot and talk to them and educate them on Free Software. So here
are a few updates.

Venue : Yet to be fixed. (Probably Beach / park near the beach. Not
sure)
Date : 11 - OCT - 2015 (Tentative, but cant delay any more)

Great, this is awesome, I can hear you say, "Count me in, I am coming",
but wait, I know you are going to come. But we need more than "I am coming".
We need some volunteers to take up some responsibilities so that the
work is distributed.

We need
1. 1 or 2 co-ordinator/s
2. A few volunteers to setup the date and venue, basically work with
murugavel and face the world
3. A lot of volunteers for the stalls, tough, I know you are putting a
stall on some Free Software you use.
4. Social media, and basic information spreading. (Marketing they call
it :-D )

Please do respond to this thread, if you are interested in any of the
above.

Also , if you have any ideas of doing this event a better way, please do
let us know.

Well this time, we are a little short on time, and we have a lot of
work to do. So The quicker the better.

Kudos to ya
