You have probably already tried this but... How about a recursive chmod?
What I mean is that you, as root, enter:
cd /home/luck (return)
chmod -R 777 mail (return)
While you are at it you may as well fix the ownership:
chown -R luck:users (return)
I'm assuming your user name is luck and that there is a users group, correct?
