It might help to shut down your desktop machine for a short time after the next uninstall, and then restart before attempting the re-installation. This will hopefully make sure that the notification of the change is propagated to wherever Microsoft thinks fit to save it. I generally prefer this full-blooded approach just in case Microsoft have 'forgotten' something in their warm re-boot code.

I would be interested to know if this actually works.

Hi Martin,

Thanks for your reply to my question. The original installation of Visual C++ Express was more than 30 days old. I tried unsuccessfully to get an activation code right after installing it, then set it aside and forgot about it for a while. I uninstalled it, then downloaded and installed it again. But it still wouldn't activate and run, even with the installation key.

I tried installing and activating it on my laptop, and it all worked perfectly. That's weird.

Is it possible that there's a not-uninstalled remnant on my desktop that's preventing the activation?

Any thoughts, anyone?

Thanks again.

Ian

Hi Ian,

Did more than 30 days pass between installing the VS Express and trying to
enter the registration key? If so, that copy of VS has timed out, and the
only way I know to workaround the situation is to uninstall it and download
again, this time with your registration key ready to hand.

Hi Listers,

I have downloaded and installed Visual C++ Express, and am now trying to get
it working.

I have successfully obtained a registration key. When I run the program, it
presents a field into which I can paste this key. But the only available
choice is “Close”, and when I click it the program closes. When I run it
again the same thing happens.

Could some one familiar with these express versions offer a suggestion about
what is wrong?

Many thanks in advance for any and all ideas.

All the best,
