Right. That's the alternative to WinFax. However, WinFax (like a regular
standalone machine) gives you feedback that the message was received. I
don't think you get that from online faxing.

You can eliminate the fax machine entirely by using a scanner, which
seems to be more efficient to me. Some scanners even have a fax
option.
I've never had more than a nominal use for this technology, so there
are probably considerations I haven't taken in to account.
Online faxing is popular, but I've never used it:
