Possibly, you need to find a way to get the BIOS boot order and drive
order back to what it was. If this is changed, depending on the mobo or
BIOS, it can change drive letter assignments.

In XP, to change drive letter assignments you can go to the Control
Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management,
then right click the drives and there's "Change drive letter....." and
go from there. I don't remember how to do this in Win98, but I believe
TweakUI will do it. http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/tweakui It's
also on the Win98 CD but it's not installed by default. For that you
should be able to search the CD for the .inf file (tweakui.inf), right
click it and "Install". Once installed it will show in the Control
Panel.

As to why they would be different, I can't say for sure. Apparently
differences in the two OS's with......possibly the way they are ordered
in the BIOS. (You'll probably have to get someone to check the BIOS for
you since you say you can't see it ;-).

Like Hugh said, USB works in Win98, however, USB 2.0 does not work
without USB 2.0 drivers. You need some kind of service pack, patch, or
driver, can't recall.

It doesn't matter where a USB drive shows up letter wise. Changing the
letter is for user-friendliness.

This will probably be a bit confusing, but here goes. I
have
a dual boot system, Windows 98 SE and Windows XP SP3. The
hard drive is partitioned into "c" "d" "e." There are two
optical drives and a serial port Iomega Zip drive.

A few weeks ago I had to work on the CPU heat sink and fan
and I must have jiggled the battery because I had to press
F2
during booting to set the BIOS defaults. Prior to that time

both 98 and XP listed the drives in the same order.
However,
after the battery jiggling the listing was this way.

When in "my computer" in Windows 98 SE the drives are
listed:
"c" hard drive.
"d" hard drive.
"e" hard drive.
"f" optical drive.
"g" optical drive.
"h" serial port zip drive.

However, in "my computer" in Windows XP the drives are
listed:
"c" hard drive.
"d" hard drive.
"e" hard drive.
"f" serial port zip drive.
"g" optical drive.
"h" optical drive.

Question one, why are the drive listings different in
Windows
98 SE than the way they are listed in Windows XP?

Now, my second curiosity.

Before the battery jiggling, when plugging in a USB drive,
while in Windows XP, (USB doesn't work in 98 SE) it came up
as drive "f" and pushed the two optical drives and the zip
drive up one letter.

After the jiggling, the USB device now comes up as "I"
adding
it at the end of the list instead of between "e" and "f."

Is it better, or more appropriate, to have a USB device
appear at the end of the drive list, or, is it OK for it to
be inserted in the middle of the list?

If anyone follows this at all, is there an explanation? I'm

guessing it has something to do with BIOS settings but I am
not able to see the BIOS screens. I just want to get some
information so that when someone comes to help me with the
BIOS settings I'll kind of know what I'm talking about and
know the best way to set the drive selection.

Thanks, if you managed to read this far in this message
(smile).

Tom
