I will try several of the suggested programs when I
get a chance. (go to the library to download them).
Meanwhile,  Virginia Da Costa sent me a copy of a program called:
             office-convert-pdf-to-jpg-jpeg-tiff-free .
It met my immediate need for converting the  .PDF file.
