When you boot up in SAFE MODE, most of your drivers will not load up. That's the whole point of SAFE MODE. No drivers. Unfortunately, this will limit what you can do. For one, you can't go online cause your modem and/or network card drivers will not be loaded. So, definition updates for your spyware/adware scanners, and antivirus scanners need to be done in NORMAL mode first. THEN you can go to SAFE MODE. Regarding using Symantec Corp online from the school's site... that's probably why it doesn't work... its online and you can't go online. If its not installed on your own system, under a standard SAFE MODE boot-up, you will not be able to employ it. ____________________________________ Sir Troth ICQ #1717439 AIM/AOL: SirTrothX Yahoo: SirTroth MSN: SirTroth@xxxxxxxxxxx (do not email me here) My Personal Email: SirTroth@xxxxxxxxx -------------------------------------------------- -----Original Message----- From: pctechtalk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:pctechtalk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of cristy Sent: Thursday, December 01, 2005 7:29 PM To: pctechtalk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- safe mode question + antivirus question Hi everyone, I use win xp and I tried shutting down and starting up in safe mode, did "clean up" and ran my spybot and adaware Se programs. I then went to scan with antivirus program but could not find it? Also my adaware wanted to update definitions and I could not go online in safe mode? I did what I could and restarted back in normal mode and my antivirus is there. I use the symantics corporation version antivirus from online at my school's site, Virginia Tech. Is that why it wont show on safe mode? I also had a question about my virus program as it quaranteed a virus a few weeks ago. Do I leave it in quarantee, it says I had one item there and I see them. I thought I deleted the files, cannot even remember now?
