When things go like that, it means your 'explorer.exe' program (the system 
side of the desktop) crashed.  The icons coming back means the system was 
able to reboot the program, but it usually leaves the system in an unstable 
state.  i.e. Time for a reboot.

Now, we have to wonder if the two things were really all that related.  It 
may have been that the system had either been running too long and already 
had low resources before you started up the server, OR that you had 
experienced what I usually refer to as a bad boot (when one or more system 
files don't load properly during a regular bootup or reboot).
