In XP, go to the exe file you wish to run, and right click it, chose
options, and then compatibility.  Now you can chose what version of windows
etc to run the program as.

This is what Sir Troth said already also!!

there is also a setting in XP where you can "make it think" it is win98 or
95 better to run older games. I have it somewhere and am desperately looking
for it.
Have never tried it, but will find it hopefully to share
