Cris, On the newer motherboards, there are generally 2 USB 2.0 ports on the back of the computer plus pins to attach another 4. These usually come 2 with your new mid-tower case and 2 with the motherboard. The 2 with the case will be on the front and 2 on the back. As Troth pointed out, the components he listed would definitely outperform the costco model you mentioned. One con he did not mention though - no tech support from the manufacturer. Of course the way tech support has gone with most of the major manufacturers lately that may not mean too much to you. I could always buy a little bit at a time! I had my son look at it - amazingly he was here for 5 minutes! He said a full tower probably wouldn't fit in here - the mid would work? hmmmm - he may even have the case from it laying in the basement - it was an old Dell - yep it's there - old dimension XPS T550. It probably wouldn't work tho - without cutting it into pieces to put things like usb port up front!! LOL and we have the floppy drive from it too - old computer he bought from someone for parts. And he said he has a cheap modem - I have speakers from this computer that could go back to this computer (for my daughter) and the speakers on here would work. They weren't listed.. I bought my XPHOME at Costco for under 100 bucks - like $89 if I recall correctly. If I built, I might want to go with PRO... cons - yeah - I'd have to build it and that is a very ominous thought!! And I'd still need to buy a monitor - they're about 3-400 for the flat screens. But - I could just go with a basic one for now. And - I understand they have decent re-built ones at the computer show. I have a wireless mouse now - optical. I love the optical - but think I will go back to wires again when it dies or I buy new. It is so hungry all the time!! I spend a small fortune on batteries for it!! Is there a good place to buy a microsoft office package? or something with Word? I have works 2000 with word - which would be fine for now. But I'm just curious. I think all of my other software on here is either free or I purchased it and could use it (all but Norton) on a 2nd system. what about the 'little stuff'? like the usb ports? Is that something separate? switches and gizmo's?? Most of the prices I got from www.pricewatch.com. This is an approximate. I would consider this a fairly good system, that would, in my opinion, way out-perform the one you mentioned from Costco. Cons: you need to build it yourself, and you'll probably be ordering from more than one company... unless you go to a computer show with a list of the stuff you need to buy... in which case we can sit down and give you a detailed list of what to buy, with model numbers, and replacements if they don't have. ---Troth ----- Original Message ----- From: cris To: pctechtalk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Wednesday, September 17, 2003 1:59 PM Subject: [Spam] -=PCTechTalk=- Re: Trying to building a P4 PC - unsuccessfully! :VSMail mx2 LOL In this instance - I haven't written back yet with how good of a system I want! Of course, I would liike a really good system. Being realistic? I'm not so sure. I want at least a 120 gb hard drive. And enough ram to keep it running without any questions. I would like amenities - dvd burner would be awesome! but - I don't have a dvd player - but would like to plan for the future. Definitely a cd burner (and my floppy drive! <smile> ) what the medion had at Costco was: Intel pentium 4 2.8 ghz 512 ddr333 120 mg hard drive 64 mb nividia video card 64MB NVIDIA GeForce4 MX440 video card eithernet 10/ bunch of ports on the front I'm pretty sure it was a DVD burner (not positive on the burner) and a Cd Burner also plus the floppy drive. I've NO clue about software.... It's priced at $1299.00 now - includes a flat screen monitor - and it has a bunch of places to put in cards from different digital cameras - just not the one I own!! LOL so - Before, the concensus was, it would be difficult to build this system for that price. Actually - this is 100 less than it was before when I looked at it. it was $1399.00 then... Ok !! I'm lining everybody up to tell me what to buy and where to buy it and how to build one!! The guy trying to talk me into it did say that the hardest thing is (and most expensive) getting the software and getting it on and running. As for the difficulty in doing it yourself? Speaking as someone with hooves for hands, it's one of the easiest 'technical' things you can do. If you can use a screwdriver, you can do it.
