Hi HB,
In XP Scandisk is called the Error-checking tool.
Open 'My Computer', right-click the drive you want to check 
click on 'Properties'> 'Tools' tab> in the 'Error-checking> 'Check Now'.
Choose the  "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors," then click OK.
