----- Original Message ----- From: jo i've been stuck with 16 colours for a while now and none of my photo apps work. my handbook says nothing at all about an accelerator and ive looked inside [being more h/w than s/w] but can't see anything that is not illustrated in the h/b. this wording [or something like it] is the first thing to flashup on the screen on bootup "sis pci true color". then comes the bootup header and bios warning, so it must be just before or just after win loading [to fast for me to be sure] that i can sometimes see, if the page hesitation allows, -auxilliary device port - s/w multiple for dynamic resolution is - 'off' - belarc tells me that i have - - sis graphics and video accelerator - 4mb video memory [shared mem bios ver.1.04 12-08-97] - support vesa bios ext. ver.2.0. i've downloaded several drivers from the sis page that i hoped were a match and put them into win sys to no avail. Can anyone add to the identity of my accelerator and advise how to obtain and install drivers for it; i'm sure 'lost drivers' are my problem. this accelerator doesnot show in device manager and none of my attempts to force it in 'add h/w' have been successful. my os is w98 any help gratefully received - jo -snip- every time i try as you suggest, or anything AT ALL, to change the status quo, which is '16 colors, 800x600 [or smaller] ', i am asked to restart. if i don't nothing happens, if i do i inevitably get a warning as soon as the boot gets into windows. it says something to the effect that there is something wrong with the display set-up and puts up the display change window EVERY TIME - 'CATCH 22' I get out of this by stopping bios and disabling 'onboard video' which is all i have and then setting up 'SVGA' when i am asked to. this is the best i can get anything else is rejected. next time i look, 'onboard' has been enabled. i need help in identifying the accelerator i have and finding and INSTALLING the right drivers which i have somehow lost and are not available in 'plug and pray' help jo from troth I'm assuming you do not have the disk that came with the system or motherboard when you purchase it, as that "should" have the correct drivers snip diagnostics/info programs that will give you all the details and specs on your system. Some, not all, will give you the model number of the motherboard, and some will go as far as telling you the video driver you need. Some of these apps are listed here: Aida32 <http://www.aida32.hu> Belarc Advisor <http://www.belarc.com> There's a few other ones I can't remember off the top of my head. -snip- The other "more expensive" approach to this problem would be to buy an independant video card and disable the onboard one... but, that's a last step, and there should be no reason, at this time, to do that. ---Troth new - no slots new - troth - i have w68 disc, all updates upto yesterday, several floppies and cd's with display drivers, quite a few of them are SIS but none work and none make any mention of graphics accelerator or auxilliary devices or software for dynamic resolution [are there any clues for anybody in there ?] i had no idea that my system had an 'accelerator' until this problem arrose, it had remained completely hidden and working at 24bit color for the past 4yrs. i know of auxilliary boards that are perched on top of cards but i don't have one. my eyes tell me it must be in one of the chips the IO chip maybe, and it must be working or i wouldn't get the message below. NEW - what can anyone tell me about this message i'm getting -- "then comes the bootup header and bios warning, so it must be just before or just after win loading [to fast for me to be sure] " -auxilliary device port - s/w multiple for dynamic resolution is - 'off' - how do i get at this 'auxilliary device port' - it doesn't show on the 'device manager' ? how do i switch it on ? does somebody have old SIS graphics accelerator drivers stowed away somewhere ? i would like to try any and all you have - TIA Jo To unsub or change your email settings: //www.freelists.org/webpage/pctechtalk To access our Archives: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PCTechTalk/messages/ //www.freelists.org/archives/pctechtalk/ For more info: //www.freelists.org/cgi-bin/list?list_id=pctechtalk
