I assume that before you bought it you actually saw it working. That means
the problem is more likely in your computer rather than the monitor.
Therefore, you should still boot to safe mode and see how or if it works
there.

Also, go into the device manager and uninstall or disable any monitor
currently installed. Use the disk that came with the Acer and install it.
Reboot.

When booting, you will likely see a dark screen, the Dell splash, dark or
solid color screen, 1st XP splash, dark or solid color screen, 2nd XP
splash, login or Welcome screen, the "loading your personal settings" screen
and finally the desktop.

If all you are missing is the final Desktop screen, then I would suspect
something in your personal settings. Gman can help there, but I would
suspect either a screen resolution or refresh rate that is not compatible
with the Acer. Also possible is a startup program or service is corrupt or
does not like the Acer and is not allowing the boot to finish. If it worked
in Safe mode these become an even stronger suspicion.

When you said "went dark" did you mean it turned off (powered down) or just
that signal was lost and the screen went blank?

Side note: For all practical purposes, your computer is not "booted" until
the desktop is available and your personal settings have finished loading.
Even then, some startup programs may still be loading.

But I tried it on my computer, which I've had a LCD on for a long time and
got the same result.
