In theory, if you try to install a MS update, and your system either A) already
has the update, or B) doesn't or can't use the update, the update will not go
through and you would get a message stating so. That's the way it SUPPOSED to
work.
In reality, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. I know in the past
everytime I try to manually add an official MS patch, if it was included in the
SP1 update, which I have, it would cancel the install and tell me that the
patch is not needed for SP1. So, it works properly for that instance.
