Hi all.

It was recommended to me that I should join this list and air what's
happened here.

I had to get a new mobo and cpu fitted
into my machine. Also some new RAM.

It was one of those deals I brought my machine into a electronics store here
in Northern Ireland. A big one, they have franchises all over the UK.
Maplins, is there name.

I brought it in because during the XP install on booting from cd it would
copy the files then say it was going to reboot and when it would boot up
again it woudl say a file was missing....

Anyway the tech in Maplisn thought it was the graphics card, then the cpu,
then it turned out to be my 256stick and 128 sticks of SD RAM were bad as
well? I've had this machine for about 3 years and never had any problems
with it. In terms of RAM at any rate. In fact I only fitted the 256 about
two years back when I first installed win xp home on here.

So I'd to buy a new 512 stick of DDR RAM.....

I think I was ripped there, but unfortunately I can't prove it. I've no
tech friends to test this mobo and cpu and RAM out....

Anyways the cpu he fitted was a, AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2000+.

I've noticed that when I'm copying files from either cd rom onto the hard
drive the computer appears sluggish during this copy. If I'm playing a
music file in Winamp whilst this is copying Winamp skips a bit. If I'm
playing a video file in Winamp whilst copying from one hard drive to another
it stops and starts like nobodys business. However, if I'm copying from or
to the other drives in the machine everythings fine. And I can quite happly
paly music and video files. Either on a seperate drive to where the data
copying is going on or to drives involved in the copy process.

Now I never, ever got this with my 384RAM and 750mhz AMD Athlon cpu.

Has anyone any idea what this is?

I've brought it back a number of times.

They've changed data cables, re-arranged the hard drives because it was
stalling during boot up. Apparently because the RAID card was taking contro
l? Despite the c drive being set to primary master and it being plugged
into the mobo.

When I fired up partition magic the c drive was being listed as drive 2.
Which was very odd. When I brought it back from the shop after they fixed
the RAID card from stalling the system the c drive was listed as drive 3!

I've rang them up this morning explaining to them that I'm not happy with
the service.

I've paid out £204 so far on parts and labour in there and the machine isn't
running satasfactory.

I was told that the tech had tryed everything he could and he could either,

1. Replace my old mobo and cpua nd RAM.

To which I replyed, "Waht's the point in doing that if they don't work"?

2. Upgrade this new mobo they've just put in?
"To whcih I replyed well the other mobo that couldn't take this AMD Athlawn
2000 xp must have been a smasher because I never got this sluggishness on it
when transfering files".

I've still no idea what specifically was wrong with the machine in the first
place and now they are talking about fitted a new c drive????????

I'm dying with a chest infection/cold here and this computer problem has
went on for almost a friggin month now guys!

If I just ask for a full refund it will involve me taking it somewhere else
to get it repaired. I've no idea where to go to that is reliable here in
Belfast. And a place that isn't going to rip the arse out of it in terms of
labour cost.

Also I'm in college so I can't afford to have my computer gone for any more
than a few days, in the most.

I'm really at a loss.

A guy on the winxphelp list told me he was.

1. Burning a cd using Nero.
2. Playing a video file.
3. Uploading files to an ftp.
4. Copying files from one network drive to another witht he same cpu as me
and never got any skipping?

Which leads me to believe that it's either.

1. The c drive.
2. The new mobo.

3. The RAID card and the mobo not liking each other?

Can anyone give me any suggestions of what to do here?

Sorry for the grammer and typos I'm very sick and everytime I think about
this all it just gets me going.

Don't get me wrong I'm not raving, swinging off the light on the ceiling nor
am impolite when talking to the techs.

We've just actually rang the store again because my father was getting
annoyed this because the fella that was on the phone this morning wasn't the
most helpful of all people. His exact words were, "I've tryed all I can".
And that's fair enough but the fact is I brought the machien down with a
problem had to replace all these parts, now it might be a problem with a c
drive I bought from them in the first place under a year ago lol.

It's a real old pantomime.

My father spoke to the manager there now and then put me on to explain what
was replaced and what work was done.

The guy and I quote said half through my explanation of at first they
thought it was this, then that, now this.

"Oh, I think i see where this is going".

So I'm bringing the machine back on Wednesday afternoon. And the manager is
going to be there.

<sigh>

I'm off for a lay down as I'm caufing my lungs up here. Lovely eh?

lol
