>From Lockergnome.......... Disabling Outlook Express in Windows XP By Carl Beehler If you haven't noticed by now, Outlook Express cannot be removed from Windows XP. If you delete its components from \Program Files\Outlook Express\ , Windows File protection will instantaneously re-install the files without any warning. It's spooky just how fast those files reappear (Especially with WFP supposedly 'disabled'). There is a way, however, to make XP say uncle and FINALLY stop trying to reinstall the files. Please remember that testing in my environment has shown no adverse effects in doing this, but my testing has been a little less than extensive. Perform this at your own risk. Prerequisites: NTFS file system Simple file sharing disabled Account with local administrator privileges Procedure: Log in as a local administrator. Navigate to \Program Files\Outlook Express Right-click on the Outlook Express folder. Click on the 'Security' Tab. Click on the 'Advanced' button. De-select the 'Inherit from parent the permission....' checkbox. In the dialog box that pops up, select 'Remove'. Close the 'Advanced' dialog box and click OK when the warning pops up. Back in the Security tab of the Properties dialog, add the currently logged in local administrator account, making sure to give the account full control. Close the properties Dialog. Now, for the fun part: go into the Outlook Express folder and delete all of the files. A WFP dialog will pop up announcing that something terrible has happened to your computer! It can't reinstall Outlook Express! Click cancel. XP will whine once more that not reinstalling Outlook 'may affect Windows stability'. Click yes, and it will give up. Delete the Outlook Express icon from the Start Menu, and you'll be finished. Windows won't try to reinstall the files again.
