A virus that first appeared in the US last year, which targets personal
computer files and then demands a ransom from their owner, has now been
reported in Britain.

The virus is part of an increasingly popular form of malware that has
been christened ransomware, on account of the demands from associated
cyber criminals for users to transfer funds to restore access to their
files.

US computer security firm Lurhq published a report on this particular
strain of ransomware, Archiveus, earlier in the month detailing how the
virus concatenates the victim's files rather than encrypts them,
deleting the original files and storing the copied files behind a 30
character password.
