Dear ,
Eurosceptics who were hoping against hope that David Cameron was going to come
squeezing down the chimney to leave all sorts of exciting reform packages under
their tree look to be in for a disappointing Christmas.
What was on your list? Did you ask for a country able to control its own
borders? For parliaments and assemblies which can't have their laws overridden
by an unelected European Commission? For a government with the power to make
its own trade deals and cast an independent vote on global bodies like the
World Trade Organization?
Instead, undecided voters who were waiting to see
what Mr Cameron would bring them before coming to a decision on the EU will
find a mixture of empty parcels ("IOU: key powers over legal rights, criminal
justice and social and employment legislation") and things they already had,
cheekily re-wrapped and passed off as new gifts. ("Recognition that the EU has
more than one currency" – really, Dave?)
Still, at least the UK's rather disappointing Christmas special (a version of
'The Snowman' in which David Cameron takes weary Eurosceptics by the hand and
shows them a fantastic vision of a reformed Europe, only for it to evaporate in
the cold light of day) manages to be bit more cheerful than the one the EU has
been screening in Greece this year (‘The Grinch Who Stole €50 billion of Public
Assets’, starring Angela Merkel).
