Please can you explain why I should have any confidence in the appointment as chairman for the Panel of an enquiry into child sex abuse someone who is an Honourary Member of the Middle Temple? It is my understanding that as a BAR attorney at law, she took an ominous oath to the International BAR Association, which grants attorneys and lawyers one of the most odious European titles of nobility in history – that of being an esquire but this is not an oath to the people of these islands. If Ms Woolf does take an oath to the people, which oath would prevail please? It is my understanding that the BAR Association is similar to a law society, but is in actuality a tax-exempt trade union which advocates for its members – which are accepted Members called BAR attorneys. Disbarment is similar to admonishment, for the reputation of the BAR is at stake, and public disgrace will of course not be tolerated… only private disgrace without media and public scrutiny. Please can you explain to me how Fiona Woolf, though doubtless very well qualified in matters of law, will be able to sit in unbiased opinion when the individual being questioned is a fellow BAR member and the reputation of the BAR is at stake? I would be grateful if you would correct me if any of my above understandings are incorrect. I would also like to add that "experts" from Rotherham Council, Police Authority etc. were in charge of the 1400 cases (including 100 babies) of child abuse/trafficking that carried on over a sixteen year period and were covered up/ignored/dismissed, so again I have no confidence in "he confirms that the panel will be made up of experts" I would go so far as to suggest that these "experts" are the very last people we need for, as recent events confirm, so-called "experts" have let us down very badly. We want, nay demand/require, that this PUBLIC enquiry is made up primarily of members of that PUBLIC - it is the only way we will accept the Panel's integrity. Yours truly anne upton. As you will see, the Minister states that, at the time of writing, the Government was still seeking a chairman for the panel. You will probably know that Fiona Woolf, the current Lord Mayor of London, has now been appointed to this role. The Minister sets out the broad remit for the panel to investigate, the areas to which it will have access, and when it will make its initial progress report. He confirms that the panel will be made up of experts and they will look into non-state bodies as well as public institutions. He also explains that it will be set up as an inquiry panel so that it does not jeopardise the ongoing criminal investigations. I hope that this is helpful, but if you would like me to press the Minister further on any of his points, or if there is anything more that I can pursue on this matter on your behalf, please do not hesitate to let me know. Yours sincerely, Steve Webb MP
