We
are pleased to
announce that
Jacob Rees-Mogg MP
is The Freedom
Association's
'Parliamentarian
of the Week'.
During
Prime Minister's
Questions this
week, Jacob
Rees-Mogg asked
the following
question:
"If
even the
respected
Hampshire police
can use the
European arrest
warrant to
create an
injustice, can
my right hon.
Friend have any
confidence that
other member
states with less
well developed
legal systems
will not use the
arrest warrant
for worse
purposes?"
He
was, of course,
referring to the
tragic case of
Ashya King, whose
parents were
issued with a
European Arrest
Warrant for taking
him overseas to
receive medical
treatment, even
though they were
free to do so and
no crime had been
committed.
The
European Arrest
Warrant is an
affront to
freedom. Warrants
can be issued on
the flimsiest of
evidence and
anyone's freedom
can be put at risk
in what is
essentially a
box-ticking
exercise. In
this video made three
years ago, Alex Deane and Nick de
Bois MP warned
how there would
be more cases
like the King
case.
Jacob
Rees-Mogg also
warned the
Government in July
in
a memorable
speech in the
House of Commons.
He was right to challenge
the Prime Minister this
week, even
though the
answer he
received was far
from
satisfactory. I
offer him my
congratulations
on being our
'Parliamentarian
of the Week'.
