I did a presentation last year to help out due to needing a replacement
presenter.
Let me remind you about Presenters.
We have negotiated with Susan to have *4 scopes and one Presenter every
night*.
That means, the presenters are not just back ups, but all presenters are
back ups to
the main presenter, because if it is too cloudy for scopes to see
anything, only the presenters will be at DBG, both of them, set up next to
each other.
If we have more than 2 presenters, we may be able to have more presenters
set up at the LUmis on cloudy dates. Do we have any other presenters
wanting to be part of this and I would need to approve your set up before
you are approved to do these events, as a presenter.
Get back to me on this very soon.
I've updated the list according to those who have replied wanting to do
this years' Lumi events.
If you aren't in the chart at the link provided below, then you need to
contact me to get in the chart.
We need more scopes to attend.
And this is a discussion about the Lumi event within this Email thread, so
keep the conversation going. I want input on how to make this event go
smoother than last year, although last year was pretty good. Everyone did a
fantastic job and I want to do that again.
Soon as I know who is and isn't attending, for sure, with a reply to this
email, I will take those who are not interested, off the list of emails and
the discussion will only be between those needing to know the Lumi info.

What this chart shows so far:
The Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue and Purple squares is the Key
as to how the chart will be set up, like last year, we will color-ize it
for easy, quick
reference as to where you are setting up at DBG.
The Walk through will be to pick locations to set up. We already know the
2 locations
on Space Mountain, and so I have chosen Red and Orange to be Space
Mountain.
The yellow, green and blue will be the 3 locations along the NAT (Native
American Trail) in which
1 of those locations will be where the presenter (s) set up.
The Purple will be someone who wants to be a Runner that night, and it
will say
SM or NAT for what area they are being runner for.
And if you are in that area for the night and want to hire the Runner, you
need to
let the runner know you are paying them that night to be there for you.
We need 4 scopes per night
We need up to 2 runners in a night
and 1 presenter each night
We also need 2+ back up scopes in a night
So, when done, there should be 9 Lumi members signed up on each night as
either
main scope, back up scope, runner or presenter.
And every night has one presenter and one back up presenter,
and the knowledge that 2 presenters on a cloudy night could happen.
If we can see anything through the scopes, the Moon, brighter stars, etc...
the scopes will be there. If it is total overcast, only presenters are
going.
And I request the help of everyone to monitor the weather and give me what
you know.
Help Sam to help me to do the right think each night.
Now down the left side, with the date, I wish to add if there is a Moon
that night and what time it is available, because the smaller scopes may
wish to stay on the moon for the night. I dont' mind taking the moon. So,
if I'm there and i can see the moon, I will take it and the rest of you can
find the more interesting objects.
I'd also like to list, in the chart, what objects you 'd like to show, so
that we do not duplicate, in one area, the same objects. Let's say that I
do the whole Moon in NAT, and someone on space mountain zooms in on a
crater on the Moon. That would be great, but unless the Moon is the only
object that night due to clouds, I prefer more variety.
For those of you doing the Walk Thru with me, if you haven't been upon
space mountain and you'd like to consider putting your scope up there one
night, let me know and a group of us will see about going up there before
we leave on Walk Thru night.
Ok, i'm going to look up the Moon availability dates and put them into the
chart.
If there is anything else you would like tracked on the chart to make it
easier to pick your dates when you sign up to do this event, let me know.
Right now, the Moon is the one object I'd like to track, but i can also
track other objects and if you have that data, send it over.
Example: We are set up from 5:30 to 9;30. I know it isn't dark until later
in the day near the beginning of these evnets, and i might want to also
track visible time, of the first object. I'll poke around and see what i
come up with and then put it in the chart and send everything the key to
reading the info i have added, but you can send me stuff to add, too.

Some of you have expressed an interest in doing this year's Lumi
events at DBG. I sent out the dates back when Susan, my contact at DBG,
gave them to me. It is roughly Turkey Day weekend to the end of the Year,
mostly Fri thru Sun and for the whole week before and after Christmas. I
believe we have 16 events this year.
Susan and I are in conversation about this event. I'd like to schedule
a walk through because Susan wants us in a different location than last
year, along the Native American Flute Trail (not called that, but she and

know what i'm talking about if i call it that).
What I'd like to do is find out who wants to do Lumi's this year, and
start a list.
What is involved to be a Lumi Team Member?
Dress code is ALL black, no exceptions.
All your outer most clothing has to be black, from 5:15 to 9:30pm.
That includes jackets, scarves, gloves, shoes, etc.
Since I sign a paper saying that PAS will provide a certain number of
scopes for the Lumi event, each night... if you sign up to do a Lumi event
and you can't do it, closer to the date, you MUST find a replacement scope
for your position. We will have back up scopes, and as long as there are
back up scopes willing to take the job in your place, you are good to
cancel, but please, do not cancel the day OF. If you are scheduled for a
Wednesday, then, by Tuesday, let me know you need to cancel and we will
ask
the Back up Scope if they can take it. The main thing is, if you are
unsure
you can keep your commitment to do the event on a certain day, please
don't
sign up.
Back up scopes are on call and should be ready to go by NOON the day
of the event. Don't signup for a Back up Scope position if you can't take
it, if needed.
Set up is 4pm every day. You need to be at DBG by 4pm for set up. A
few minutes, even 4:15 is acceptable if you have a Dob or another scope
you
can set up super fast. You must be ready by 5:15pm. And keep in mind, the
carts dont' always come get you from the parking lot the moment you
arrive.
Sometimes they take their time, so you have to consider getting to DBG
with
time to wait on the carts.
Name badges are required, please.
Pay is $195/night, which is 4 hours,
with set up at 4pm
Ready by 5:15,
Event is 5:30 to 9:30
then take down and carts take you to your car
by about 10-10:30pm
We are considering having runners, but it will be up to you to hire
your runners. We will figure out a reasonable rate, and you pay your
runner
that night, cash. You will receive a check in the mail from PAS and for
this event, DBG is prompt in paying, and pays (delivers check to me) every
Friday, or was it Saturday, no I think it was Sunday. One day a week, we
got our pay in one lump sum. Then Eric and I got the checks disbursed as
quick as we could.
So, I am making 2 lists....
The first list is who wishes to attend and be part of Lumi's this
year. So, reply to this email if that interests you. We have a few new
people on the Star Tours list who may wish to join in the fun.
The 2nd list i'm making is who wants to do the walk through with me.
Here's the plans for the walk through. Susan and I agree to wait until
it isn't so hot out, so we are thinking end of July / beginning of August.
The plans are... DBG wants to hire 5 PAS Members.
4 scopes and 1 presenter every night.
That means Kevin and Mike will be very busy as presenters.
If it is cloudy, both presenters can be at the event and we may cancel
the scopes. We have to discuss this with Susan. May want to have a scope
on
display even with the clouds.
I had suggested to Susan to have 2 scopes up on Space Mountain and 2
scopes and a presenter on the Native American Flute trail. She said she
prefer to have us all in one area, but i did reminder her that the view
from Space Mountain is awesome!
So, we want to meet about sunset, or just before, then walk to the
Native American Flute Trail, and find areas to put scopes. Then, when it
gets dark, take notes of the areas we picked and see what's availble in
the
night sky for a scope to show. I want to take along star charts to give
examples of what the sky looks like from each location and name the
locations. Some of you can help pick the locations and then leave, others
may wish to stay until i'm done with the walk through and drawing the sky.
That is the plan.
If you have a suggestion on what date to do the walk through, it has
to be a clear night, no clouds. Doesn't have to be perfectly clear, just
clear enough to see some constellations and see where we are looking to
get an idea of how much of the sky can be seen from each scope location.
