Hi All,

As I write, I'm more than a little rattled.  At about 4 a.m. this morning, my
smoke detector went off unexplicably and scared the hell out of me.  I had no
intention of awakening a neighbor to come and get the fool thing down, so I
called the non-emergency police department, thinking there must be a
non-emergency fire department number but that wasn't available through 411. The
police dispatcher transferred me  to the fire department and I explained that
I'm blind and live alone in a house and that a two-year-old smoke detector was
inexplicably going off. I did have fansrunning, thinking that the only smell I
smelled which could have set it off was car exhaust.  Was I ever embarrassed!
They sent a fire truck out, and a couple of guys got the thing down. They said
it looked as if it were a disposable smoke detector as there was no way to open
it and no way to disengage the battery or to put a new one in. The fireman said
I would be very much eligible to have someone come out to the house as a senior
citizen so they could put new smoke detectors in.  They also have things like
grab bars to prevent falling.  I may have those put up as well.

Last night, I called AT&T Tech Support with a request to lessen the strength of
my fire wall, hoping that my Bookport Plus would stay connected, allowing me to
put books on it from my downloads file.  That stinging thing has never worked
well for me in terms of books, though I have downloaded from BARD and have it
registered with BARD. The guy from India was very put off with the fact that I
am blind and was having some difficulty going onto log me in 1 2 3 and
connecting with him to do a remote session. I did everything correctly and yet
didn't connect.  He had me get out of the program, then hit windows r for run,
then had me type in "I e x p l o r e space then m s c o n f I g." I didn't know
what any of this meant, but he wanted me to put my computer into safe mode for
some reason.  Whatever he did, it messed the hell out of my computer, and
yesterday I had to call my local repair shop and pay roughly $40 to have the
technician come out and figure out how I could get my computer to start and
function properly.  The one benefit was that I was able to get my incoming and
outgoing server addresses in case I want to start getting e-mail through the
Voice Sense I bought from Nancy Lynn.  Anyway, don't know now how long it will
take me or my poor terrified kitty to get back to sleep!! As I say, two hellish
nights!!
