I wouldn't have had much to say about him unless that little known factoid
hadn't been involved. I didn't even know about it until the "Wonderful World of
Bobby Vee" album was finally put out on a CD in the early 2000's. Even though
the single had appeared on another album compilation, it wasn't clear that he'd
recorded the song that early until the release of that LP in the early 2000's.
Like everyone else, I thought it was recorded around 1966 though I did suspect
something in that he did sound a bit different between 1963 and 1966.

Thought this might be of interest at least to some. Bobby Vee's first
musical influences were actually country. While growing up in Fargo, North
Dakota, he heard artists such as Hank Williams in the early 50's, and the
Williams' record "Cawliga" (pronounced "Caw Lyja" was, in his words, "the
first record I had to do anything about." He loved it so much that he
called the radio station asking that they play it more for him. Country
music would prove to be very popular in and around the Fargo area. He also
loved George Jones, along with his rock 'n roll favorites such as Elvis, the
Everly Brothers and Buddy Holly. His brother Bill, who later led a small
combo, loved Johnny Cash. Producer Snuff Garrett allowed Bobby to record "A
Girl I Used To Know" on a 1963 album which was called "The Wonderful World
of Bobby Vee," but the album was never released as Garrett was aware of the
Beatles' huge success in England. In fact, Garrett wanted to sign the
group to Liberty Records. Their manager, Brian Epstein, wouldn't go for it
and later signed with Capitol. Long story short, the track was actually
recorded in the spring of 1963, but it didn't see the light of day until
January 1966.
