[security] password safekeep mechanism

Folks, I have worked with clients that mostly store passwords in some file
format and share it within team. Such files are mostly password locked also. At
some sites, i have come across encryption tools that provide the password
access based on your domain login id, ssh key or certificates. And there are
other sites that use only verbal communication or printed matter that is then
stored under lock and key.
I want to get a general opinion on how you store or recommend password should
be placed and shared. Thanks in advance.
