GPT is a replacement for the traditional Master Boot Record (MBR) and can be a requirement for machines with the UEFI replacement for BIOS. I'm dealing with the PITA of attempting to dual boot (Win7+Linux) a UEFI/GPT setup at home. Grrrrr. But parted seems to be ready for it, whereas the more familiar (to me) fdisk isn't.
