drop synonym taking too long in 10.2.0.3.0

Has anyone found a reasonable solution to this problem?

I've found information on Metalink that it's due to a
bug, but the suggestions either don't help (alter
session commands) or are unreasonable (alter system
set optimizer_features_enable='9.2.0').

We're finally getting a handle on the 10g optimizer and
don't really want to set the features to 9.2.
