a remote external table whose database is on another server and I was
able to successfully query the data so it is possible to indirectly
reference the directory objects remotely.

As far as I know, no. The directory would have to be made

Have DIRECTORY OBJECTS from database A on server A point
to and create its files on server B?

                thanks.
