I'm also a fan of shutting it down and leaving it shut down for a few
weeks if possible before destroying it.  That way, if it turns out
someone actually was using it, or some data was needed, etc. you haven't
lost anything.

A couple more things - update any backup software (e.g. deactivating
Netbackup policies) and monitoring software such as Grid Control, OVO,
Nagios, etc.
