It's a vague term used to describe any level of detailed knowledge
beyond the 'SGA/PGA/Background-Processes' block diagram.
It is also the study of a life time. Few people can claim more than a
passing knowledge of internals, in part because it generally requires
reverse engineering of the software, and in part because it
significantly changes with each version and patch set.
But people who are members of the Oak Table can state with confidence
that they have more knowledge of how things work inside the software
(internals) than most people.
The more you know about how it works, the more likely you are to be able
to understand WHY things happen, and therefore the more likely you are
able to avoid problems (performance usually) or use the system more
efficiently.
