It's always the simple and seemingly-innocent stuff that gets us.

It was indeed an ORACLE_HOME + ORACLE_SID mismatch, just not the way we 
expected.  Just yesterday I was telling my students that the two strings 
are used to identify the SGA location, and here it is...
