Morning all, thanks to all who replied, I now have 64 bit guest OS running under VirtualBox. The problem was, as so many pointed out, because virtuali[zs]ation support was turned off in the BIOS. Once enabled, all was well again. Martin Bach asked "Is there a reason you don't use para-virtualisation? Performance might be a lot better." - yes, I'm only playing with virtuali[zs]ation at the moment and I'm too lazy! I tried Xen a while back on OpenSuse and didn't get on with it very well. I then tried VirtualBox 1.x and liked it a whole lot better so I've tended to stick with it. I'm planning to try out Oracle's VM at some point so I may get back into the Xen methodology anyway! Once again, thanks everyone. Cheers, Norman.
