There is no reason why you should not or can not have the Client software
in the same O_H as the Server.
{A server install automatically installs the client, in any case. In
8.1.7, only Pro*C does not get
installed -- it has to be installed seperately as a client install -- but
can still be in the same O_H}

What problem did you encounter or hear of when applying Patches ?

There can be certain configurations where you have to have a seperate
install because you need to
run seperate versions -- eg Oracle Apps R11 links against 8.0.6 libraries
while the Database is 8.1.7.

When you are upgrading your database on a server you might just to upgrade
the server first and
gradually upgrade your clients.
