I second that - we used Oracle Names Server (I think that's what you meant by 
"SQL Names") for a long time and were very happy with it until we upgraded to 
10g and I actually went back to tnsnames.ora files rather than implement OID.

I don't know why Oracle got rid of the Names Server - it seemed like such a 
solid, simple and useful application.

I still prefer SQL Names, too bad Oracle did away with it.
