Tried deploying to the Admin server instead of creating a separate
container just for a tiny demo app. (? maybe that's why?)
I tried deploying to EAR, then deploying that EAR into WebLogic 10.3, same
type of error:
Unable to access the selected application.

Ironically, http://middlewaremagic.com/weblogic/?p=1952 says
Every EAR must have a Valid java/web/ejb module along with
“META-INF/application.xml” file. “application.xml” file is the Main EAR
deployment descriptor file, Which contains the Information about the
Different types of Modules available as part of the EAR appication.
